Body Bashing Blues

The mirror, the scale, the jeans that won't zip.  We've all been there at one time or another.  You wake up in a good mood, but that nasty little voice in your head get's the best of you and convinces you that you're just not good enough today.  All of a sudden you feel demoralized because you don't look like Beyonce.

Accepting your body can be a daily struggle, but it doesn't have to be. You have to nurture yourself even when you are having a bad hair day, or you think your thighs are too big.  Beating ourselves up is a total waste of time.  Here are a few ways to beat the body bashing blues:

  1. ABANDON PERFECTION.  Perfection is a figment of your imagination.  It is a false ideal that society has tricked you into thinking is attainable by starving yourself into thinness.  No one has a "perfect" body. It doesn't exist.  Women have cellulite and hips and stretch marks and acne and whole lot of other things that have absolutely nothing to do with who we are as people.  Just for today, accept all your flaws and begin to see them as beautiful expressions of your uniqueness.
  2. STOP DIETING.  Diets are a multi-billion dollar industry. I don't know about you, but I've been on my share of diets since I was 12 and none of them ever had lasting results.  It wasn't until I decided to stop dieting, almost two years ago, that I have come to love my body.  It's weird, but it actually works.  I accept that this is what my body looks like today, and that it's strong and can lots of cool things.  Today I am grateful for my body and I no longer wish to punish it by restricting my food and doing all sorts of crazy things in the name of beauty.  I am beautiful as I am and so are you!
  3. START LIVING NOW.  For many years I missed out on all kinds of really fun activities because I thought I was to big.  That's total bullsh*t.  Big girls can do whatever they want to do.  What kept me from trying new things was fear of what others would think of me.  But I'm now realizing other people don't give a rat's ass what I'm doing or not doing. They aren't paying me any attention.  I'm not the center of the universe.  FANCY THAT!!  When I relax and allow myself to have fun, it is then that I am living life and loving who I am.                                                                                                    
  4. ACT AS IF.  When all else fails, just fake it til' ya make it!  That's right, I'm asking you to pretend to love your body.  For a long while I just couldn't look at myself in the mirror without criticizing myself.  It was so painful to live that way.  A friend suggested "acting as if" I loved my body for a week.  It seemed like such a silly thing to do, but miraculously it worked.  What I have come to understand is that it's much easier to change our behavior and let the thinking catch up, than the other way around.  Too much thinking allows you to procrastinate indefinitely. So, look at yourself in the mirror today and say something lovely about your body.  It will eventually feel true.
